This project is designed for the “Art to Gather by Xintiandi” program, using the door as its central theme. The design integrates people with doors; a person within a door becomes a “spark.” The “door” serves as a spatial-temporal interface, and the “spark” represents emotional resonance—”One Step to Spark the City.” The project comprises twenty distinct installation points, corresponding with the 20th-anniversary celebration of Wuhan Tiandi’s opening.

In this project, I designed the three main spatial installations, from the idea to the refinement before implementation, including Creative Ideas, Installation Design, and Modeling.

the Door of Block & Sway

“Block” refers both to toy blocks and to the city block. The installation uses blocks to construct a giant archway. Swinging swings imbue the arch with vitality, responding to the concept that “people give the door its heartbeat.” Both the blocks and the swings carry collective memories, transforming abstract urban culture into an experiential action.

the Door of Whispering

A series of lightweight, fluttering metal sheet “doors” is arranged along the wall, gently swaying in the wind to form a dynamic vertical matrix. Each door varies slightly in style, symbolizing fragments of urban memory interweaving in the breeze. Characters representing “Wuhan” and “20” are integrated within the arrangement; the wind transforms into language, bringing greetings to the people of the city.

the Door of Revolving Sequence

Extending the language of “Block,” this installation creates a circular array of door units, evenly distributed around the outer perimeter of the square. The arrangement uses a sequential matrix language to generate a continuously perceptible space. Each door can rotate independently, encouraging chance encounters and shared smiles between people. These arrayed, encircling, and revolving doors highlight serendipity and human connection.
